Book Recommendations

If anyone is interested in learning more about the history of the divided country of Cyprus, I would recommend Yiannis Papadakis' Echoes from the Dead Zone: Across the Cyprus Divide. Although this text was the basis of Papadakis' dissertation, it is a very readable, very humane, story. He tries to answer the unanswerable question, "Why are the peoples who once lived together now so isolated from each other?" Unlike most approaches to the "Cyprus Problem" which are written from one critical view or the other, Papadakis travels on both sides of the Green Zone and attempts to understand the perspectives of all who suffered before and after the conflict in 1974. Currently, Papadakis teaches at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia.

Another book, related to the above only by its efforts at conflict resolution is an interesting read for anyone who needs help negotiating family, work, or other conflict issues. Published by the Arbinger Institute, The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict offers a step-by-step approach to changing conflict into a win-win situation.
